Autumn beach recycling gets under way along Eastoke seafront
Coastal Partners, working for Havant Borough Council, says autumn beach management on South Hayling began on 28 September 2026 and is expected to last about four weeks.
Coastal Partners, acting for Havant Borough Council, has announced this year's autumn beach management works on South Hayling. Its notice of 21 September 2026 says the contractor, Les Searle Earthmoving Ltd, was due to set up equipment along the Eastoke frontage in the week beginning 21 September, with the works themselves starting on Monday 28 September 2026 and lasting around four weeks.
What the work involves
Coastal Partners says the beach work is carried out twice a year: in spring, to rebuild beach levels after winter storms, and in autumn, to prepare for the coming winter. Much of it is shingle recycling, moving material from parts of the beach where it has built up to places where it has eroded. This autumn the aim is to restore the height and width of the beach crest before the 2026/27 winter. The shingle will come from Gunner Point, the Coastguard Revetment and open beach along the southern frontage.
What to expect on the beach
A haulage route will run between Gunner Point and the Eastoke frontage, marked with traffic cones every 50 metres. The beach stays open, with safety barriers and warning signs at key points. Coastal Partners asks people to stay behind the barriers, keep young children close and keep dogs on leads around the heavy machinery.
The council's coastal team explains that a healthy beach takes the force of storm waves and helps protect the Eastoke area from flooding. Read the notice on the Coastal Partners website.
