Hayling Island Beach Guide — West Beach, Eastoke, and More
Hayling Island has miles of sandy beach — but which part is best for families, watersports, or a quiet walk? Our local beach guide has the answer.
Hayling Island has some of the best beaches in Hampshire — wide, sandy, and backed by a gentle promenade with beach huts, cafes, and parking. Here is a breakdown of the main beach areas.
West Beach
The main beach on Hayling Island runs along the western side of the island, facing east towards the Solent. It is a long, wide, sandy beach with excellent facilities: beach huts available for hire, a café, toilets, and paid car parks.
The water at West Beach is generally shallow and gently shelving at low tide, making it well-suited for families with young children. The same south-westerly winds that create excellent watersports conditions can make West Beach breezy even on warm days — bring a windbreak if you want to sit for a while.
Watersports: West Beach is the hub for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding on the island. Several schools and hire outfits operate from the beach during the season. Beginners should book a lesson first — conditions can be powerful.
Eastoke
The eastern beach at Eastoke Corner, at the south-eastern tip of the island, is quieter and has a different character — more natural, backed by low dunes and grass rather than promenade infrastructure. It is a good beach for dog walkers year-round.
The views from Eastoke look across the entrance to Chichester Harbour towards West Wittering and the Isle of Wight on clear days. Lifeboat Cottages at Eastoke mark the site of the RNLI lifeboat station.
North Beach
The northern shores of the island, facing Langstone Harbour, are not sandy beaches in the traditional sense — they are tidal mudflats with saltmarsh, best accessed at low tide on foot for birdwatching. Swimming is not suitable here due to strong currents in the harbour entrance.
Parking
Beach car parks fill quickly in summer. Arrive early (before 10am) or expect a long walk. The main car parks are at West Beach (at the end of Beach Road and Station Road), and at Beachlands on the eastern seafront. There is no free beach parking within easy walking distance of the main beaches in peak season.
